Alexandria Residential Sales Now vs. Last Year

Be the first to comment on this post

I checked the Alexandria MLS this week, from the first of the year to June 4th this year we had 97 sales in Douglas County. Last year, same time frame, we had 123 sales.

A 21% drop…actually not too bad considering last year was a government involvement year…this year, no help. It’s a real market now and I feel that it is holding its own. Could be better, could be a lot worse.

June 1, 1973

That was the date that I graduated from high school. I was 17 at the time. Things I remember most…

Vietnam War was ending, troop pullout started in January 1973
Drinking age in Minnesota was lowered to 18.
Drug usage was high and very prevalent
My first months pay in the Marine Corps was $188/month
Gasoline was in the 30 cents range
New cars were still expensive at $3,000+ each
People didn’t borrow money for cars, boats, motorcycles…
There was little trust in the government
4 loaves of bread was a little over $1.00
Protesting was rampant and often times violent
Americans were getting killed in America by Americans
Americans were getting killed in Vietnam by Vietnamese
We were to stop the spread of Communism at all costs.
We were very concerned about nuclear bombs from Russia
People were worried about their future
People complained about everything
People still had to work hard to pay for their existence
Everyone dreamed of being rich
Hollywood entertainment was thoroughly enjoyed on TV and in the theatres.
We liked new gadgets
Japanese made was usually junk
American made products were far superior
Nothing was made in China back then
Every little town had a grocery store
I graduated from Villard High School. Going to Alexandria was still a big event.
There were a lot more gravel roads
Most of the people in rural Minnesota were employed in Agriculture.
Air travel was seldom used
Vacations were usually less than a couple of hundred miles away.
Going Up North was always exciting
I-94 was in it’s infancy
You could fix your own car or motorcycle
Dad still had a two bottom plow and 3 boys to drive the tractor
Hay bales were still small and square
30 milk cows supported a family of 7

That’s about all for now…

Lakehome Sales in Alexandria MN

Be the first to comment on this post

In checking the sales in the MLS for Douglas County in the lakehome section yesterday, here’s what the data said…

From the first of the year 2010 to June 1, 2010: There were 29 lakehomes closed

From the first of the year 2011 to June 1, 2011: There were 25 lakehomes closed

That’s a 14% drop…you will find that the residential closed sales are higher. I will put that in tomorrow.

Consumer Confidence Declines in May

1 Comment | Leave A Comment

Consumer confidence fell 5.2 points to 60.8 in May, falling to it’s lowest level since November. Overall, it is still doing better than 2009/2010. These dipsie doos are okay, all part of a market equilibrium.
